Custom Framing FAQ
What is custom framing?
Custom framing is just that – custom! It means that we assist you in picking a frame, mat, glass, etc. and tailor it exactly to fit both you and your art’s needs.
I’ve never done this before and there are so many frames! How do I go about choosing one?!
That’s what we’re here for! We have over 40 years of combined experience working with customers to help them choose the best possible mat and frame for their picture.
What does it cost?
This all depends! The two biggest factors that determine the cost to get something custom framed are the size and frame you choose. Of course, the larger your picture is the greater the cost. Also, we have hundreds and hundreds of frames to choose from – all of which are individually priced by the linear foot. One frame can cost $6.00 a linear foot, while the frame sitting next to it can cost $40.00 a linear foot!
Concerned about price?
Don’t worry, we can steer you in the right direction in choosing a quality inexpensive line of frames that still enhance your artwork!
We are also more than happy to give you an estimate on what your picture will cost to frame. While we can give you a really rough estimate if you just tell us your picture is yay-big by yay-big, it is best to actually bring your picture in so we can determine what exactly your picture needs and what may look good with it.
Why does it cost so much?
This is all about perspective. It costs a lot compared to what? A typical frame job costs a hundred dollars and up. When you compare that to something you buy off the shelf at Walmart that’s been mass-produced in China then, yes, it does seem expensive! When you bring in your picture to our gallery, we custom design it to your specifications. You are also paying for high-quality materials that help preserve your artwork – including our acid-free mats, acid-free backing boards, acid-free tapes, an option of having U.V. filtering glass, etc. We are trained and skilled in our craft to carefully and articulately assemble your custom framing piece to perfection.
And remember, “The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price has faded from memory.” – Aldo Gucci
Do I pay now or when it’s done?
We like to ask for a deposit when placing a frame order, ideally 50%.
Do you use acid-free materials?
Yes! We use only acid-free mat boards and acid-free backing when framing your pictures. When drymounting, it is your choice whether you want your image on regular or acid-free board.
Should the framing for my art match my furniture?
In some cases, customers want their framed pictures to match their furniture or wall color. This is perfectly fine! However, it is also good to keep in mind that you are more likely to change your wall color or buy a new sofa before you decide to reframe your artwork. In the end, the decision is up to you.
How long does it take?
Our typical turn-around time is one month. Don’t worry, we don’t send your art off island to be framed by someone else (common misconception)! We place weekly bulk orders on our frames, and monthly bulk orders on our mats and this is why we like to tell customers to give us at least one month in case we don't have the materials in stock.
However, if you need something sooner for an event or birthday we have always managed to get it done in time!
